Welcome to the Chronic Kidney Disease Newsletter July edition. If you are person with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis or helping care for someone who is, this newsletter was created for you! The content is meant to keep you and/or a family member up to date on the latest information to help you manage your health now or in the near future in consultation with your physician.

In this month’s CKD Insider : Kidney Week Reimagined, Fun Tip of the Day, Research in the News, and Kidney X Dialysis Reimagined winner summaries.

What’s the latest: A multicenter study looked at the safety and risk of an HIV+ donor versus an HIV – donor providing a kidney to a person who is HIV+ and found there were no deaths or differences in one-year graft survival, one-year mean estimated glomerular filtration rate, HIV breakthrough, infectious hospitalizations or opportunistic infections. All of which is a good sign! One year rejection was higher for HIV+ donor recipients, but not significantly, and is being investigated further.

Why it’s important: If you are a person living with HIV (HIV+) and are interested in kidney transplantation, this study provides you and your doctors with some positive news in relation to your options and the outcomes seen.

NitriCap

What it is: Nitric Oxide-Eluting, Disposable Hemodialysis Catheter Cap to Prevent Infection and Thrombosis. This small cap is placed on the catheter, the Nitric Oxide that is released released decreases biofilm formation, which allow bacteria to hide from immune system.

Why it’s important: If you are ever in need of a catheter for dialysis, you will be informed of the dangers of infection associated with catheter placement and usage. This cap has the potential to decrease the infection rate and give you peace of mind. Early animal studies are very promising and have shown a 100,000 fold reduction in biofilm formation versus an FDA approved infection prevention device for dialysis catheters.

Status: Patent pending. Currently in 9 month verification phase, FDA 510K submission will follow. Timeline: Plan to bring to dialysis units in 2022. Hear from inventors here.

VenoStent

What it is: SelfWrapTM - A bioresorbable wrap that improves fistula maturation.

Why it’s important: Quicker fistula maturation and usability can help doctors predict if they will need to provide you with a catheter beforehand and reduce physical complications.

Status: Human trials outside the US planned. Hear from inventors here.

Relavo

What it is: PeritoneX - an intermediate connection device that internally disinfects connected peritoneal dialysis tubes to prevent contamination.

Why it’s important: If you are a peritoneal dialyzer, this can alleviate the concern and stress about infection and give you an additional layer of peace of mind.

Status: Currently doing human factors trial, ending 2021 and starting user study with American association kidney foundation in coming months. Plans are for clinical trial in 2022. Hear from inventors here.

iHemo

What it is: Surgically implanted hemodialysis cartridge placed in the abdomen that connects externally to a portable dialysate recirculation pump.

Why it’s important: This would simplify the hemodialysis procedure, making it easier for in home hemodialysis and during your travels, as no fistula or graft would be needed and the external pump is portable.

Status: Proof of concept work has been completed. Next plans are to work on safety of cartridge in humans. Hear from inventors here.

Vasobio

What it is: VasoCoat™ - a technology to coat vascular grafts used for hemodialysis with endothelial progenitor cells to attract endothelial cells and allow improved graft acceptance.

Why it’s important: This technology could help your vascular graft stay healthy longer and reduce the potential follow up procedures needed leading to improved quality of life.

Status: Prototype is in testing phase in animal models. Hear from inventors here.

Center for Dialysis Innovation (CDI)

What it is: Pro-regenerative vascular arteriovenous (AV) graft for hemodialysis that heals in place like a natural artery.

Why it’s important: If you are in need of an AV graft, this fabricated graft has the potential to improve your experience and minimize challenges associated with graft failure.

Status: Technology under development. Preliminary studies in animals were successful. Patent approved. Hear from inventors here.
